Wireless alarm installation

Wireless alarm systems have come a long way since their introduction. They’re now incredibly reliable, and use low frequencies of between 400 and 900 MHz to penetrate solid structures like walls and doors. While wires can be cut, wireless intruder alarms can rarely have their signal blocked, making them a more durable option to fight against even the most persistent of burglars.

One thing to be aware of, however, is wireless jamming; this is a technique where a burglar will use an RF jamming device to temporarily disable your wireless alarms. This is much more of an issue with one-way systems; two-way systems can often detect such attempts at disrupting the signal, alerting the alarm operator of the potential threat.

As more advanced two-way radio devices become increasingly common, the central control panel can also be used to identify any faults in the alarm system; each sensor can send and receive information, meaning you can keep track of the whole alarm system and fix any faults as they soon as they occur.

Perhaps surprisingly, wireless alarm systems are actually cheaper to install than their wired counterparts. This is partly because installing a system with physical wires requires laying the cables in an appropriate and safe manner. With wireless alarms, each element of the system is far easier to place and install; this makes it simpler, and often cheaper. It also means that components can be placed in optimal locations, not limited by wire access or other similar constraints.

Pet-friendly alarms

For those of us with pets, it’s important to choose an alarm system that’s pet friendly, or you’ll be alerted to a burglary every time you leave the house with the dogs or cats. Pet-friendly alarms are able to tell the difference between people and pets, and will only raise the alarm if a person has intruded.

One way that this is achieved is by differentiating between the weight of a person and the weight of a pet. Certain passive infrared sensors (PIR), for example, can be set to disregard anything that weighs under 35kg, which is the weight of an average medium to large-sized dog. This means that the alarm system will alert you if it detects a larger body, but not if it detects your pet. While this might not be suitable for those with larger dogs, such as Great Danes, for most dogs, cats, and other small pets, it can be a very effective solution.

Pet-friendly alarms can also be set to have a special pet-friendly area in which activity won’t trigger any alarms. This could be one or several rooms, possibly in an area with secure doors or windows that you aren’t concerned about people breaking in through. A security consultant or locksmith will be able to provide you with professional advice on the most appropriate areas, with the least risk of someone entering.

Installation of CCTV and home security

While home security systems used to be little more than an alarm system, as technologies have advanced, they’ve become a lot more than that. A lot of homeowners are starting to use home security systems with integrated camera systems; this type of home security solution has a number of benefits

First of all, it can provide you with peace of mind if you’re ever concerned about what’s going on at home. You might be worried that someone’s broken in and the alarm hasn’t been triggered, or the alarm might be activated and you want to know what’s happening as soon as possible. Cameras remove a lot of the ambiguity inherent to simple alarm systems, helping to keep you more informed on what’s happening in and around your home.

Second, CCTV helps to deter burglars in the first place and makes it a lot easier to hold them accountable if a burglar does break in. The images and video footage that they record can make it a lot easier to identify and prosecute burglars, making it more likely that you’ll achieve justice.

Our team of professional locksmiths have years of experience in installing these systems. They can come to your property to identify any potential weak spots, advising on the most appropriate home security and CCTV solution for your exact circumstances.

While it can be tempting to install a home security system yourself, don’t be tempted. Not only is it incredibly technically challenging to do it correctly, but alarm systems also need to be installed and maintained by an SSAIB or NSI-approved company for insurance purposes.

Burglar alarm installation

Professional burglar alarm installation is a complex process, with steps before and after the system is actually installed.

First, a locksmith will come round to your property at a suitable time, to conduct a survey. They’ll go through any potential weak points in your home, inspecting doors, windows and any other potential weak links in the security system. Suggestions for potential improvements might include getting securer locks, acquiring a security lighting system, and in many cases, getting a burglar alarm installed.

Next, the locksmith will install the alarm system, adapting it so that it’s effective for your specific property. At regular intervals, the installer can then come and check up on the alarm, making any adjustments if necessary. As a lot of the components are out in the weather, it’s possible that sometimes parts will need replacing, but all of that can be checked during inspections.

As mentioned above, as tempting as it might be to buy and install an alarm system yourself, it’s not worth saving a relatively small amount of money when the security of your home is in question. Every property is different, and it’s generally not possible to just follow a simple sheet of instructions and end up with a secure and effective alarm system. From Stockport and Cheshire to Glossop and Buxton, we’re happy to discuss alarm installation in your home when you’re ready for an upgrade (or just want impartial advice from our team about your current home alarm setup).
