Window Security

Windows are often used as either an entry or exit route for burglars. Properties with windows left open or unsecured locks are a desired target for the opportunist burglar.  There are wireless  sensors available that detect movement as soon as a person starts entering  via the window.

Tips

  • Remember to close and lock all your windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes.
  • Windows on the ground floor and in accessible areas should be made of toughened glass or doubled glazed.
  • Make sure windows are fitted with a good lock appropriate for the window type.
  • Avoid leaving valuables, house or car keys near windows.

Double glazed windows

WindowsDouble glazed window locking systems should be fitted at the time of manufacture.  A general rule to follow is that the handle should not be the only means of keeping the window closed.

Single glazed windows

GlassAll single-glazed areas on both the ground floor and other accessible areas can be vulnerable to attack.  Plain glass is easily breakable so consider using laminated glass.  This is far more difficult to break through as it will not shatter and will therefore delay any attempt at forced entry, a valuable deterrent.
